‘The Journey is the Film’

Thulasi Madhuri is a Toronto-based photographer working primarily with 35mm and medium-format film. Her practice focuses on people, culture, and lived environments, documenting moments that carry emotional and historical weight. Her relationship with film photography began unexpectedly in 2020 during a trip to California with a single Kodak disposable camera and only 27 exposures. The limitations of film quickly became a discipline. In 2021, following the passing of her grandfather, she discovered a collection of his old family photographs. Those grainy images revealed a visual archive of memory and untold stories, inspiring her to approach photography as a way of preserving fleeting moments that may one day become historical artifacts.

Alongside her personal documentary work, Thulasi works across production environments as a photographer and camera department collaborator. She has contributed to campaigns and productions with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, supporting shoots involving the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Toronto FC, as well as brand partners including Sun Life, KLM, PlayStation, Canadian Tire and Sobeys. Her work has been exhibited at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography and recognized through awards from Gallery 44, Toronto Image Works, and The Remix Project. Raised in Ontario, Canada, she is part of the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora with roots in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, a perspective that continues to shape her approach to documenting people, memory, and place.
